Turlock, CA – On March 28, 2024, Turlock Police Department Detectives and the Special Investigations Unit (S.I.U.) served a search warrant at three (3) residences in the 400 block of S. First Street in Turlock for an alleged animal cruelty investigation and possible dogfighting. The investigation began in early March 2024 after Turlock Animal Services expressed their concerns based on prior contacts in the area. Animal Control Officer Borges took the initiative to compile all documentation related to the addresses and handed it over to Detectives for review.
 
During the course of the investigation, surveillance revealed approximately ten (10) dogs that were “tethered” in the yards. “Tethering” is a term to describe a practice of fastening an animal to a stationary object, which is illegal in the state of California.
 
With the assistance of patrol and Animal Services, Detectives located and rescued a total of 73 dogs from the properties, some of which were pregnant and due to deliver any day. The living conditions that the dogs were living in were deplorable and inhumane. All dogs were seized as evidence and transported to the shelter where they have remained safe and cared for. Each dog has been evaluated by a veterinarian and treated for any injuries or diseases. Due to the high number of dogs at the shelter and limited space, Turlock Police Animal Services will not be accepting owner surrenders until further notice.
 
Detectives have identified Jorge Ayala, a 46-year-old Turlock resident, as the suspect of this investigation. His whereabouts are currently unknown.

Turlock Police Animal Services are asking for the community’s assistance. There are currently ten (10) dogs that are in the shelter that are not part of this investigation and need to be adopted or sent to rescues. All fees will be waived.
