Entangled whale
The Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Network is aware of an entangled humpback whale in Iliuliuk Bay and is working with local responders to gather imagery, assess the severity and configuration of the entanglement, and coordinate a response. Entangled whales are known to survive for a long time and this entangled humpback appears to be in good condition and is able to breathe regularly. Entangled whales can be very unpredictable and dangerous, so please stay at least 100 yards from the whale and do not take matters into your own hands. To learn more about the expertise and specialized tools used by members of the Stranding Network, please find more information on the NOAA Fisheries Alaska Large Whale Entanglement Response webpages. If you have information about the whale, please contact the stranding network 24/7 hotline at 1-877-925-7773.
