Eclipse Timing and Safety Information

The April 8, 2024 eclipse will be a total solar eclipse. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and Sun completely obscuring the Sun. All of the United States will experience a partial solar eclipse. An eclipse path sweeps across central Mexico, parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and southern Canada. During totality, you may view the Sun without proper eye protection, such as solar glasses. But during all other phases of the eclipse, you should only look at the Sun when your eyes are protected. The Oak Grove area is NOT in the path of totality (between the red and blue lines of the path of the accompanying map), and eye protection should remain in place at all times when directly viewing the sun.
If you choose to look at the eclipse, wear approved eye protection. Our retinas (light detecting tissue at the back of the eye) do not have pain sensors to signal damage from looking at the sun. You can cause serious damage to your eyes without feeling any pain. Only use viewing devices that carry the ISO approval stamp.
Do not attempt to view the eclipse while driving.
Do not look directly into the sun without proper eye protection during the solar eclipse, as it could be harmful to your vision.
Do not look at the sun through a telescope or binoculars unless they are equipped with an ISO approved solar filter.
Do not look at the sun through sunglasses, smoked glasses, or welder's glasses.
Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched, punctured, torn, or otherwise damaged, discard it. Always supervise children using solar filters.
If you are watching the entire eclipse, you may be in direct sunlight for hours. Remember to wear sunscreen, a hat, and protective clothing to prevent skin.
The eclipse should begin in Oak Grove at 12:38 PM and the maximum darkness should be about 90.50% at 1:55 PM. The sun should appear as a thin crescent at that time. Totality will not occur in Oak Grove. The remaining sliver of the sun will still be painfully bright and ISO approved sun glasses and filters should REMAIN IN PLACE. The eclipse should end about 3:11 PM. Maximum eclipse duration 2:33:38.
