Earthquake Update
The Town of Westfield has not received any reports of injuries or damage following this morning's earthquake, which occurred at 10:23 AM with a 4.8 magnitude. The earthquake was centered about 7 kilometers, or 4.3 miles, north of the Whitehouse Station section of Readington Township in Hunterdon County. At about 12:20 PM, the US Geological Survey reported a 2.0 aftershock centered west of Bedminster in Somerset County.
The Town is in the process of checking its infrastructure out of an abundance of caution. Similarly, it’s advisable to check your home foundation and walls for cracks and damage. A full checklist of FEMA recommendations can be found at bit.ly/earthquake-damage-checks.
The NJ Board of Public Utilities reports it has been in contact with the state's electric and gas distribution companies and regional grid operator, and no impact or damage has been reported as this time to utility infrastructure or the grid.
As indicated earlier, please do not call the Westfield Police Department to inquire about the earthquake or any potential aftershocks unless you require immediate assistance. If there are any further developments, we will provide the community with additional information.
