Post earthquake message.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has advised that a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, originating near Lebanon Township (Hunterdon County, NJ), has affected New York and New Jersey. New Brunswick emergency services and City officials have assessed the City, and at this time there have been no reported injuries or significant damage to buildings or structures.
The New Brunswick Office of Emergency Management recommends the following post-earthquake tips:
• Conduct a thorough inspection of your entire home or business, both inside and out. Look for any signs of damage to walls, ceilings, windows, beams, pipes, and other structural elements.
• Check for damaged utilities and appliances (gas, electric, water). Check periodically after an earthquake in case a leak or damage is not large or easy to identify.
• Listen and smell for natural gas leaks. Never use a lighter or matches that could cause an explosion.
• Turn off utilities only if a further hazard exists. (Remember, gas service restoration must be done by a professional to prevent damage or injury).
• Have qualified professionals inspect your home and utilities for damage when able.
• Document damage to your property. Pictures and videos can do a lot to help with insurance claims.
• Be prepared for aftershocks. These can occur hours, days, weeks, or even months after a large quake.
