Final Crime numbers for 2023 in Amarillo show a decrease in violent and property crimes.

The Amarillo Police Department has released the final crime numbers for 2023. Amarillo has seen a decline in both violent crimes and property crimes. This is a change from 2022 where the city saw an increase in some violent crimes and stolen vehicles. Chief Birkenfeld states, “We are pleased to see that property crimes declined significantly in Amarillo. We encourage everyone to lock your car and take your key with you to eliminate theft of vehicles.”

The department is pouring a lot of time and energy into violent crime prevention and investigations. Investigative units have stepped up the focus on gangs and illegal gang activity and work closely with state and federal prosecutors to make sure that anyone who commits a shooting in Amarillo is held accountable at the highest level. The department is heavily invested in Project Safe Neighborhoods, which often results in prosecution of known felons and gang members in possession of drugs or guns. The Criminal Investigation Division has added resources for homicide investigations. “We have one of the highest clearance rates for homicides in the nation,” says Chief Birkenfeld. “Our detectives work tirelessly on these cases to consistently identify and arrest the offender in more than 88% of murder cases.”
