2024 Solar Eclipse Safety
Friday, April 5, 2024
On Monday, April 8th, 2024, a solar eclipse is set to occur. In Tucson the eclipse will begin around 10:06 AM and end around 12:36 PM, with maximum coverage happening at approximately 11:19 AM.
While we encourage you to take advantage of this natural phenomenon, we also want to emphasize the importance of safety precautions.
- Do NOT look directly at the sun.
- Even during an eclipse, it’s not safe to look directly at the sun with the naked eye.
- Use certified solar viewing glasses.
- Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient to protect your eyes during and eclipse. Use certified solar viewing classes that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.
- Use solar filters for telescopes and cameras.
- If you plan to use telescopes, binoculars, or cameras to view the eclipse, make sure they are equipped with proper solar filters. Never point these devices at the sun without appropriate protection.
- Be cautious of unfiltered cameras and smartphones.
- Most camera lenses and smartphone cameras are not designed to safely view the sun. Using them without proper protection can damage the device and may not provide safe viewing for your eyes.
