Vehicle Collision Results in Arrest

April 9, 2024 - Last night, around 8PM, Novato Police Officers and Novato Fire Paramedics responded to the report of a major injury collision involving two vehicles, at the intersection of Rowland Blvd and Redwood Blvd.

NPD Officers and NFD medical staff treated a 25-year-old Novato resident at the scene, who had been driving a Honda sedan south on Redwood Blvd, when he was struck by another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle was identified as Susan Schuster, a 49-year-old Novato resident. Schuster entered the intersection against a red light while driving east on Rowland Blvd, resulting in the collision. The 25-year-old driver suffered a major injury as a result of the collision and was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. He is expected to survive and we wish him a speedy recovery.

When officers contacted Schuster, she showed signs of impairment and was evaluated at the scene by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Schuster’s Blood Alcohol Level (BAC) was over the legal limit and she was subsequently arrested for Felony Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury. Schuster was safely booked into Marin County Jail after medical clearance at the hospital.

We would like to thank our partners at the Novato Fire Protection District for their assistance in providing medical aide to all parties involved. If you were a witness to this collision or have any additional information, please give us a call (415-897-4361) and reference case #NP24-1122.

We have recently seen an increase in DUI arrests/collisions and this is a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Driving under the influence can result in traffic collisions, causing injury or even death.

Driver Safety Tips:

  • If you have ingested an impairing substance, such as prescription drugs, sleep medication, marijuana, or any illegal drug, do not drive.
  • Know someone who has ingested an impairing substance? Do not let them get behind the wheel.
  • Passengers should never ride with an impaired driver. If you think a driver may be impaired, do not get in the car.
  • If you see an impaired driver, call 9-1-1
