DATE/TIME: April 9, 2024/ 8:34 A.M.
INCIDENT: Spoofing Scam
LOCATION: City of Rancho Cucamonga
SUSPECT(S): Unknown
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at approximately 8:34 A.M., Rancho Cucamonga deputies were made aware of a spoofing scam directed toward the residents of Rancho Cucamonga. An unknown male caller "spoofed" his caller ID to display the Rancho Cucamonga Police Station phone number. The caller identified himself as an employee of the police department and provided a false name, badge number, and case number.
The caller attempted to scare the victim into believing their identity had been used to commit a crime or that a warrant was out for their arrest. The caller asked the victim to provide additional information to prove their identity or claimed money was needed to be sent to clear the arrest warrant.
If you feel you have been contacted by a phishing scam or are unsure whether the caller identifying themselves as law enforcement is legitimate, you can contact the Sheriff's non-emergency dispatch at (909) 941-1488.
Anyone with information regarding this case should contact the Rancho Cucamonga Station at (909) 477-2800. Callers wishing to remain anonymous should call the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463) or go to www.wetip.com.
