Imitation Firearms in Our Communities

Yesterday, on April 17th 2024, Central Marin Police Officers, with assistance from neighboring agencies, responded to a report of a person brandishing a gun on one of our school campuses after school hours. A high-risk stop was initiated due to the nature of this call involving persons who were potentially armed with firearms although the firearms were later determined to be imitation.  This was a highly dangerous situation that caused tremendous stress for all of those involved, including the reporting party.  The Marin Sheriff’s Office responded to a similar incident earlier in the week where an imitation firearm was also involved. It is not difficult to see how these incidents could have taken very tragic turns.  Please see the attached photos - imitation water pistols and an authentic 9mm pistol.

These calls are in response to a game that some students in our community partake in.  Our School Resource Officer and Administration are working in partnership with our school districts to bring awareness to this game and its potential for unintended consequences.

The Tamalpais Unified School District sent the following message:

  1. Some students may be playing or considering playing the game "Assassin”, where they attempt to “shoot” one another with water guns or other projectiles throughout the community.
  2. Community members, including small children, have reported feeling unsafe and scared when encountering students “playing” this game as many of the “weapons” are very realistic looking and we have received reports of students chasing each other in cars at high rates of speed and running through backyards and private property.
  3. This is not a school-sanctioned activity. Students found playing Assassins may be disciplined. Please speak to your students and direct them to refrain from playing this game.

The Central Marin Police Authority asks for your support in communicating the dangerous consequences of playing this game.  We will strictly enforce any and all violations involving imitation firearms, which can include citations and arrests.

Thank you for your attention and action to this message.
