LOCATION: Hospitality Lane and Tippecanoe Avenue, City of San Bernardino
SUSPECT(S): Deigo Espinoza, 25-year-old resident of Riverside Francisco Trujillo, 18-year-old resident of San Bernardino
VICTIM(S): State of California
SUMMARY: On Saturday, April 20, 2024, at about 10:16 p.m., deputies from San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Central station were driving in the area of Hospitality Lane and Tippecanoe Avenue. They observed a large gathering of about 200 vehicles parked in the parking lot of a business that was closed. The deputies observed a driver, later identified as Diego Espinoza, in a silver BMW, exit the parking lot at a high rate of speed, causing the vehicle to lose traction and momentarily veer out of control, endangering a group of 10-15 pedestrians who were in close proximity.
The deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but encountered resistance from pedestrians who obstructed the patrol unit's path. Additional deputies were called to assist in the investigation. As more deputies responded, another vehicle at the same location accelerated at a high-rate speed causing the tires to lose traction with the ground. A second traffic stop was attempted, however the driver, later identified as Francisco Trujillo, led deputies on a brief pursuit.
Espinoza was arrested California Vehicle Code (CVC) 23103, Reckless Driving. Trujillo was arrested for CVC 2800.2, Evading Law Enforcement. Both vehicles involved were impounded.
