Help Raise Awareness about Sexual Assault Victims at Denim Day Event on Wednesday April 24

April is Sexual Assault Victims Awareness Month and the last Wednesday in the month is observed as Denim Day — a day of action and awareness in which people are encouraged to wear denim to combat victim blaming and educate others about sexual violence.

On Wednesday, April 24th, the Special Victims Unit will man  a resource table at a Denim Day event hosted by the Solano Advocates for Victims of Violence and Family Justice Center.

The event will take place in front of the courthouse (675 Texas Street)  between 9:00-12:30 pm on that day.

Why Denim?

In 1998, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because Court members believed the victim “gave” consent because, they said, she had have to helped her offender (her driving test instructor) remove her skinny jeans.

Following the verdict, the incensed women of the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court.

Their protests preceded today’s tradition, with Denim Day being an annual event in the following years - including this year.

We hope you can join us for Denim Day tomorrow - let’s spread awareness, together!
