INCIDENT: In-Custody Death Investigation
LOCATION: West Valley Detention Center, 9500 Etiwanda Ave., Rancho Cucamonga
DECEASED PARTY(S): Eduardo Lopez, 23-year-old Male, Resident of Hesperia
SUMMARY: On April 1, 2024, Eduardo Lopez was arrested by the Hesperia Police Department for vandalism and obstructing/resisting a peace officer. Lopez was booked into High Desert Detention center and later transferred to West Valley Detention Center (WVDC).
On April 15, 2024, Lopez was observed harming himself in his cell at WVDC. Lopez was evaluated by medical staff and relocated to a safety cell. Lopez was monitored frequently in the safety cell by deputies and medical staff. On April 16, 2024, Lopez was found unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff performed life saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived and Lopez was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital for further medical treatment. Lopez’ health continued to decline, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital on April 25, 2024.
Detectives with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Specialized Investigations Division responded and are conducting an investigation. Lopez’ cause of death is pending autopsy, to be conducted by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
