Pedestrian Safety Operation Yields 32 Citations of Drivers and 1 Arrest for Drug Possession
On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, between 10:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m., San Mateo Police Traffic Unit conducted a Pedestrian Safety Operation at two San Mateo intersections, N. Delaware St. at E. Bellevue Ave. and on Peninsula Ave. at Woodside Way. During the 3-hour span, officers screened 143 vehicles and issued 32 citations.
The primary mission for this type of operation is to educate motorists and pedestrians of the rules of the road through use of traffic enforcement and education, with a primary focus on vehicle-pedestrian type offenses occurring within the City of San Mateo. Through the facilitation of these pedestrian safety measures, the ultimate goal is to reduce the number of pedestrians struck by vehicles in crosswalks as well as reduce the severity of crashes involving pedestrians.
As suspected, the highest volume of violations was for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk (21950(a) CVC), with cell phone violations (23123.5/23123(a) CVC) coming in second. During one of the violations mentioned above, officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and found the driver to have an active warrant for his arrest. During a search of his person and vehicle, the driver was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and paraphernalia. He was subsequently arrested and transported to San Mateo County Jail for booking.
