Public Safety Press Release: Hit and Run Near Rancho Cotate

On 5/3/2024, at approximately 0830 hours, Rohnert Park emergency dispatch began receiving multiple calls for a collision on Snyder Ln. at Hinebaugh Creek near Rancho Cotate High School. Multiple callers reported a white mustang being driven north on Snyder Ln. struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk and fled the scene. Officers and firefighters responded to the scene and arrived within minutes and located a juvenile on the ground on the east side of the roadway. The juvenile was alert and had sustained injuries during the collision.

Several witnesses remained on scene, and one captured the suspect vehicle on video giving officers a license plate to search for. With the help of the dispatch center and Sonoma County Sheriff's Deputies, the mustang was located just outside of Cotati. Officers were able to make contact with the owner of the mustang who identified her boyfriend, Angel Antonio Martinez (22-year-old male from Cotati) as the driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Martinez was taken into custody without incident. Martinez was booked at the county jail for Felony hit and run 20001(b)(2)CVC, Felony Child Endangerment 273a(a)PC and violation of his probation as he is on probation for previous reckless driving.

The juvenile was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He was accompanied by school staff until his parents were able to meet him there. Rohnert Park Public Safety would like to remind pedestrians and scooter riders to make sure vehicles stop before proceeding into the crosswalk. Scooter riders need to wear a helmet while riding. In this case the lights were functioning correctly and were activated by the scooter rider, however, the lights don’t always get drivers to stop and wait for those using the crosswalk.
