SCSO Investigates Fatal Officer Involved Shooting Outside of Turlock

Turlock, CA -

Detectives with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU) are currently investigating a fatal officer involved shooting in unincorporated Turlock.

On Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 3:51 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 3100 block of N Quincy Road in unincorporated Turlock on the report of a suspicious person.

Initial dispatch information said a white male adult had been trespassing and was armed with a weapon.  Upon the Sheriff’s Office arrival, which included a K-9 officer with the Turlock Police Department to provide back-up, they located the armed person.

Deputies made several attempts to establish a dialogue, brought in multiple less-than-lethal options, and tried to de-escalate the man into complying with their instructions.  While speaking with the armed suspect, he refused to drop the weapon and charged at deputies without warning.  This caused a deputy to use his firearm.  The man was treated and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The scene is still currently being processed by detectives with the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) unit.  They will be on-scene for several hours continuing to gather evidence and identify further witness information.  No law enforcement personnel were injured during this critical incident.

We will provide additional information as details become confirmed and corroborated.

Detective Summerton is the primary case agent.  He can be reached by calling 209-525-5625 should citizens have witness information to share.  Tipsters can also contact Stanislaus County Area Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous by calling 1-866-602-6463.

The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office will be conducting an independent investigation and review into the officer involved shooting.  The SCSO Internal Affairs Unit will be also be conducting their own administrative review to determine if agency policies were followed.
