OPD Makes Arrest Within 30 Hours of Homicide
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) has arrested Justin Jenkins in connection with the homicide of Michael Seymour, which occurred on May 5, 2024. Seymour was in his vehicle at 12th Street and Lake Merritt Boulevard when he was shot. After being struck, Seymour drove to the 1200 block of 1st Avenue where he was involved in a vehicle collision. Seymour was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following the homicide, patrol officers conducted a thorough preliminary investigation and recovered valuable evidence at the crime scene. Through investigative follow-up, officers identified Jenkins as the primary suspect in the homicide.
Due to the phenomenal and collaborative efforts of OPD’s Crime Reduction Team (West), Community Resource Officers (West), and Homicide Section, Jenkins was safely taken into custody the following day, on May 6th, in the 1200 block of Broadway. Officers recovered a loaded firearm in Jenkins’ possession.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has filed charges against Jenkins for his involvement in the crime.
Background:
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating a shooting that occurred on May 5, 2024, in the 1200 block of 1st Avenue, just before 12:00 PM. The OPD Communications Division was notified of a shooting. When officers arrived, they located a victim who sustained a gunshot wound(s). Paramedic personnel responded to the scene to assist. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators from the OPD Homicide Section responded to the scene to take over the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification to next of kin.
