SUMMARY: On Saturday, May 4, 2024, at approximately 4:49 p.m., deputies from the Fontana Sheriff's Station responded to a 9-1-1 call involving a residential burglary in progress in the 5700 block of Sycamore Avenue in Rialto. Deputies searched the residence and located a male subject hiding in a closet inside the home. When deputies attempted to place the subject in handcuffs, he fled over fences and remained hidden in the area. Deputies conducted a lengthy search with the assistance of Sheriff's Aviation and a Sheriff's Bloodhound but did not locate the suspect.
Later that evening, at approximately 8:23 p.m., a resident in the 5700 block of Magnolia Avenue called 9-1-1 and advised he was held hostage in his home by a white male adult who initially hid in his back yard. Deputies responded and provided aid for a 92-year-old male victim. Detectives from the Fontana Sheriff's Station were called in and continued working on this critical investigation.
Detectives used various Sheriff's databases and positively identified Corey James Dawley as the suspect responsible for crimes at both locations. Detectives authored an arrest warrant for Dawley and began conducting surveillance at various locations in Victorville and San Bernardino.
On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, members from the Fontana Station Detective Bureau and Multiple Enforcement Team located Dawley leaving a residence in San Bernardino and took him into custody during a felony traffic stop. He was transported to the Central Detention Center and booked for multiple felony charges and remains in custody. Investigators believe Dawley is responsible for other residential burglaries captured through video in the San Bernardino and Rialto areas and are releasing his photo.
