Rev Up Safety: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Redwood City, Calif. — During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May, the Redwood City Police Department would like to remind drivers to always look twice for motorcycles. By practicing safe driving habits and taking shared responsibility on our roads, we can help everyone arrive at their destination safely.

“Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so be extra careful before changing lanes,” Chief of Police Kristina Bell said. “A simple double take could mean the difference between a safe journey and a tragic crash. Motorcycle riders do not have the same protections drivers and passengers do. Let's all do our part to keep each other safe out there.”

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, there were 6,218 motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2022. Motorcyclists were about 22 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash and four times more likely to be injured.

To help protect you and your family, keep the following tips in mind while driving or riding:

 

Drivers

• Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
• Do not follow a motorcycle too closely. Always keep a safe distance.
• If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Be sure that the rider is turning before moving ahead.

Motorcyclists

• Always wear a U.S. DOT-compliant helmet with eye protection.
• Wear leather or other sturdy clothing such as a jacket, pants, boots with nonskid soles and gloves. Add reflective strips or decals to your clothing and motorcycle to make it easier for other drivers to see you.
• Ride defensively. Don’t assume a driver can see you. Avoid riding in a driver’s blind spot. 
• Always keep your lights on, even during the day.

Lastly, both drivers and riders should never drive/ride distracted or under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Acelere la Seguridad: Mayo es el Mes Que Se Reconoce la Seguridad de las Motocicletas

 

Redwood City, California — Durante el mes de mayo, cuando se reconoce la seguridad en motocicletas, y El Departamento De Policia De Redwood City desea recordarles a los conductores que siempre revisen sus alrededores por motocicletas. Al practicar hábitos seguros de conducción y compartir la responsabilidad en nuestras carreteras, podemos ayudar que todos lleguen a su destino de forma segura.

"Las motocicletas pueden ser difíciles de detectar, así que tenga mucho cuidado antes de cambiar de carril,” aviso La Jefa de Policia Kristina Bell. “Tener precaución y mirar dos veces podría significar la diferencia entre un viaje seguro y un choque trágico. Los motociclistas no tienen las mismas protecciones que los conductores y pasajeros en un vehículo. Hagamos nuestra parte para mantenernos a salvo unos a otros”.

Acuerdo con los datos de la Administración Nacional de Seguridad Vial enseñan que 6,218 motociclistas murieron en choques de tránsito en el año 2022. Los motociclistas fueron cuatro veces más probables de resultar heridos y 22 veces más probables de morir, comparados a los conductores y pasajeros en vehículos. 

Para ayudar a proteger a usted y a su familia, tenga en cuenta los siguientes consejos mientras conduce o viaja:

Conductores

• Siempre revise sus espejos y los puntos ciegos antes de cambiar de carril.

• No siga a un motociclista demasiado cerca. Siempre mantenga su distancia.

• Si ve un motociclista con su intermitente puesto, tenga cuidado. Asegúrese que el motociclista este dando vuelta antes de que usted siga adelante.

Motociclistas

• Siempre utilice un casco con protección para los ojos que cumpla con los requisitos DOT de EE. UU.

• Use ropa resistente como chamarra, pantalones, guantes y botas con suelas antideslizantes. Agregue tiras o calcomanías reflectivas a su ropa y motocicleta para que otros conductores puedan verlo más fácilmente.

• Conduzca a la defensiva. No asuma que un conductor puede verlo. Evite conducir en el punto ciego del conductor de vehículo.

• Mantenga siempre las luces encendidas, incluso durante el día.

Por último, los conductores y pasajeros nunca deben conducir distraídos o bajo la influencia del alcohol y/o drogas.
