SUMMARY: On May 13, 2024, at approximately 3:41 p.m., deputies assigned to the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station responded to a report of a traffic collision at the intersection of Onaga Trail and Aster Avene in the town of Yucca Valley. The suspect, Wayne Major, was the driver of a black 2003 Saturn Vue. During the investigation, deputies determined two collisions occurred and were caused by Major.
The first incident caused by Major was a hit and run traffic collision. Major traveled westbound on Twentynine Palms Highway and approached Sage Avenue, where vehicles were stopped for at a red light. Major failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a stopped vehicle. Immediately following the collision, Major fled the scene in his vehicle, south on Sage Avenue. Major left the accident scene at a high rate of speed, with complete disregard for other motorists.
As Major approached the intersection of Aster Avenue and Onaga Trail, he once again, failed to stop at a traffic control device. Major collided with a vehicle traveling through the intersection bearing the right of way. The driver of the vehicle Major struck was in her late term pregnancy and was subsequently transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Major's second collision caused his vehicle to roll multiple times and come to rest in the yard of a nearby residence. The female passenger of Major's vehicle sustained traumatic injuries. The passenger was transported to a local hospital for life-saving treatment. Major sustained injuries as well, and was also transported to a hospital for treatment. Through further investigation, deputies believe Major was driving under the influence during the collisions. Additionally, Major was found to be in possession of suspected fentanyl.
Major was released from the hospital and booked into the Morongo Basin Jail.
