Advisory

City of Winter Springs notifying residents of incident along West Lake Howell

The City of Winter Springs is notifying residents of an incident along West Lake Howell in Seminole County that could impact residents.

On May 14, 2024, FDEP and the South Seminole and North Orange County Wastewater Transmission Authority alerted Seminole County of a force main break near the intersection of SR-436 and Howell Branch Road, resulting in an unknown amount of wastewater entering Lake Howell.

The equipment maintained by the City of Maitland, SSNOCWTA, and consultants CHA Engineering has since been repaired, and the leak has been stopped.

Due to the leak, officials advise residents to wait to fish or swim in Lake Howell until further notice while SSNOCWTA monitors water samples for bacteria.

This notice is being sent to Winter Springs residents due to the water flow from Lake Howell northeast through the City via Howell Creek into Lake Jessup.

While there are no indications that the portion of Howell Creek within the City limits is affected by the leak, Winter Springs officials are advising residents along the creek to avoid swimming or fishing until it is safe to resume recreational activities.

It is worth noting that the system involved in the leak is maintained by the City of Maitland, SSNOCWTA, and consultants CHA Engineering, NOT the City of Winter Springs.

Residents with additional questions are directed to contact SSNOCWTA at (407) 628-3419 or [email protected].
