The City of East Lansing and other local municipalities are partnering with Ingham County to provide emergency alerts via Smart911 from Rave Alerts. The system will launch on June 1, but community members are strongly encouraged to sign up now.

The City has been using Nixle to communicate emergency events, including road closures, severe weather and other critical situations for more than a decade. Notifications will no longer be sent via Nixle after Saturday, June 1. Community members who wish to begin or continue receiving emergency alerts MUST sign up for Smart911 to avoid missing out on important information.

Smart911 is a more advanced and robust system than the current one, which will allow quick and effective communication with community members during emergencies and in critical situations. Smart911 offers users the ability to manage their settings as well as to customize what types of alerts they want to receive and how they will be sent, including voice message, text message and email options.
