On May 21, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., an on-duty Fremont Police Patrol Officer encountered a solo vehicle collision that had just occurred near the intersection of Fremont Blvd. and Thornton Ave. The officer discovered the vehicle had struck a large tree and was starting to catch on fire. The officer was able to extract an injured adult male occupant from the vehicle. The injured occupant was transported to a local trauma center for medical treatment. Unfortunately, the adult male driver did not survive the collision.
The Fremont Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit responded and assumed the collision investigation. Excessive speed appears to be a significant factor in this collision. At this time, it is unknown if drug or alcohol impairment is a factor in the collision.
The injured male occupant is a 19-year-old resident of Newark. The deceased male driver was a 19-year-old resident of Newark.
This is Fremont’s third fatal traffic collision in 2024. Two occurred on Fremont’s local roadways and the third occurred on state controlled State Route 84 Niles Canyon Road.
