Narrative: | |||||
Two Moorpark High School students were arrested for making false reports of an emergency. On May 15, 2024, the Moorpark High School Resource Officer was notified of a post on a social media account indicating a school shooting was going to take place that day. The post was sent to numerous students, who reported it to school administrators and the School Resource Officer. At the time, it was unknown who was responsible for creating the social media account. Moorpark High School Administrators issued a “Shelter in Place” order for the campus while the threat was being investigated. After thoroughly investigating the information that was available at the time of the incident, it was determined there was no threat to the campus. The investigation revealed the suspect who created the social media account and posted the false information about the school shooting was a student at the school. On May 17, 2024, the student was contacted and arrested after additional evidence linking the student to the social media post. The investigation continued and revealed a second suspect, who was also a student at Moorpark High School, was involved in posting the threat on social media. On May 23, 2024, the second suspect was arrested after additional evidence was located linking them to the crime. The students were arrested for a violation of PC 148.3 – falsely reporting an emergency and booked at the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard. The Moorpark Police Department maintains a close working relationship with the Moorpark Unified School District Administration and Staff (MUSD). The Moorpark Police Department also strives to create strong bonds with the students and staff they serve, garner their trust, and develop strategies to maintain a safe learning environment for all who attend MUSD schools. The Moorpark Police Department strongly encourages students and staff members to continue reporting legitimate safety concerns involving MUSD schools so the concerns can be thoroughly investigated. |
