Convicted Felon Identified and Arrested for an Assault with a Firearm in a January Case

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.

INCIDENT:  Assault with a Firearm / Felon in Possession of Firearms & Ammunition

LOCATION: 3000 Block of Amboy Road, City of Twentynine Palms

SUSPECT(S): John Gonzales, 67 year-old Male Resident of Twentynine Palms 

VICTIM(S): Confidential Victim / State of California


SUMMARY: In January of 2024, deputies assigned to the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station responded to a shooting call on South Amboy Road  in the City of Twentynine Palms. The victim reported he was riding his dirtbike in the desert area when an unknown male suspect fired two shots at him.  At the time of the report, deputies did not have any leads and the investigation was reassigned to investigators within Detective Bureau. 

In the latter part of May , detectives assumed the investigation and discovered critical leads regarding this violent assault, and conducted a follow-up investigation in the City of  Twentynine Palms.  As a result of their investigation, detectives authored and served a search warrant at a residence in the 3300 block of Amboy Road. During the service of the search warrant, detectives recovered 23 firearms, including a short barreled shotgun, several thousand rounds of ammunition, firearm parts, firearm manufacturing parts , high-capacity magazines, and body armor. 

The Amboy Road resident and suspect in the January 2024 shooting was identified as convicted felon, John Gonzales.  Gonzales was arrested for PC 245 (a) (2) - Assault with a Firearm and PC 29800(a) (1) - Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Gonzales was booked at the West Valley Detention Center with a bail amount set at $40,000.00.
