INCIDENT: Search & Rescue for Lost Hiker

LOCATION: Mt. Baldy

SUBJECT: Kiara Cuaya, 22-year-old female resident of Fullerton, CA

SUMMARY: On Saturday, June 1, 2024, the Fontana Sheriff’s Station was notified of a lost hiker on Mt. Baldy. Kiara Cuaya, a 22-year-old female resident of Fullerton, went for a hike on Mt. Baldy and became lost. She was able to find a cellular phone signal and call for help.

Sheriff’s Aviation responded but was not able to rescue her. Volunteers from the West Valley Search and Rescue team responded overnight and hiked several hours into the wilderness. They located Cuaya uninjured and escorted her off the mountain where she was reunited with her family.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to be prepared when hiking. Take applicable supplies, ensure you know your intended path, hike with another person, and communicate your plans to someone in the event you need unexpected help.
