Suspect Connected to 2022 Robbery Homicide Arrested
 
San Leandro, CA - On Monday, May 27^th, 2024, an officer with the California Highway Patrol Ventura Office conducted a traffic stop on a car for a vehicle registration violation in the city of Oxnard.  The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Artemio Torres, had provided false information about his identity to the CHP officer. 
 
Further investigation by the CHP officer led to the discovery of an outstanding arrest warrant for Torres in connection with the robbery of a security guard at Kaiser Hospital in San Leandro in September of 2022.  The security guard was shot and killed by one of the suspects during the robbery. 
 
During the original investigation, San Leandro detectives identified Torres as the driver of the car used in the commission of the crime.  Torres was believed to have fled the state afterwards. 
 
28-year-old Akbar Bey of Oakland, the suspect believed to be responsible for committing the murder, was arrested by SLPD in October of 2022.   
 
On Monday, June 3^rd, Torres was extradited from southern California to Alameda County where he will face felony robbery charges.  There are no other outstanding suspects in this case.
