Detectives Investigate In-Custody Death at the West Valley Detention Center

DATE/TIME:  June 2, 2024/9:28 p.m.

INCIDENT:   In-Custody Death Investigation

LOCATION:  West Valley Detention Center, 9500 Etiwanda Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga

DECEDENT(S): Benjamin Jose Medina, 43-year-old resident of Fontana

SUMMARY:
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, at about 5:55 p.m., Benjamin Medina was in custody at the West Valley Detention Center when he collapsed in a housing segment.  Deputies and jail medical staff responded and performed life-saving measures, including CPR and the use of Narcan.  Medina regained a heartbeat and was transported to a hospital for additional medical care.

Over the following days, Medina’s health declined and on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 9:28 p.m., he was pronounced deceased.  Investigators from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation.  An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Medina was arrested on March 15, 2024, after he was contacted by the San Bernardino County Probation Department and found to be in possession of marijuana and items related to honey oil production.  He was taken into custody and booked in at the West Valley Detention where he remained until his death.
