POLICE ARREST VEHICLE THEFT SUSPECT AFTER PURSUIT
HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA – June 6, 2024 – Hollister Police officers arrested a carjacking suspect after initiating a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle was captured at two locations on the FLOCK camera system in the City of Hollister.
On June 5, 2024, at about 11:57 PM, Hollister Police officers received a notification via the FLOCK camera system for a stolen vehicle that was seen being driven in the area of San Juan Hollister Road and Graf Road. At approximately 12:06 AM, officers received a second notification of the same gold colored Infiniti sedan, in the area of Meridian Street via the FLOCK camera system. The San Jose Police Department had entered the vehicle into the stolen vehicle system after receiving a report of the car being stolen and the victim of the theft allegedly being shot on June 5, 2024, in the City of San Jose. The suspect was still outstanding.
Officer Mckinney responded to the area in an attempt to locate the vehicle. While on Highway 25 and Meridian, he observed a vehicle matching the description north on Highway 25 at a high rate of speed. Officer McKinney was able to catch up to the vehicle at Highway 25 and he initiated an enforcement stop. The vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued.
Hollister Police officers, in a joint operation with the California Highway Patrol, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, and Gilroy Police Department, pursued the vehicle into southern parts of Santa Clara County and back into San Benito County. The vehicle eventually came to a halt at Highway 101 just north of Highway 156. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was swiftly apprehended with the aid of a K-9 unit from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.
The suspect, Sonya Ortiz (35) from Gilroy, was medically cleared at the hospital and later booked at the San Benito County jail on charges including evading a peace officer in a reckless manner, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a stolen vehicle. San Jose Police Detectives responded to the scene and took possession of the vehicle.
We would like to thank the California Highway Patrol, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and Gilroy Police Department for their assistance with the pursuit of the vehicle and apprehension of the suspect.
