Narrative:

At approximately 9:15 AM on June 5, 2024, the Rio Mesa High School Resource Officer and Headquarters patrol deputies responded to a report of a small incendiary device that was ignited on the Rio Mesa High School campus. Deputies discovered that a small aerosol can was ignited by students in a trashcan at the school. Detectives from the Headquarters Station, Major Crimes Bureau, and the Sheriff’s Arson Unit responded to investigate the incident.

Detectives determined the juvenile suspects intentionally ignited an aerosol can in a trashcan outside when a staff member was in the area. The staff member suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and received treatment at a local medical facility.

The suspects were quickly identified as Rio Mesa High School students and arrested for Possession of a Destructive Device, Explosive with Intent to Injure/Intimidate, Arson of Property, Assault with a Deadly Weapon Other Than a Firearm, and Conspiracy. The suspects were transported and lodged at the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center.

At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat or danger to the school, students, or staff.
