Suspect Convicted of Felony Assault on San Leandro Officers

Suspect Convicted of Felony Assault upon a Peace Officer
Seven years later, San Leandro officers find peace and closure in jury’s decision

San Leandro, CA - On Tuesday, June 4th, 2024, an Alameda County jury convicted 64-year-old Terry Gordon of committing a felonious assault upon a peace officer and causing great bodily injury. The trial stemmed from a 2017 incident during which two San Leandro patrol officers attempted to stop Gordon for suspected shoplifting from Safeway in the Greenhouse Marketplace at 699 Lewelling Boulevard.

When the officers approached Gordon in the Safeway parking lot, he ran away from them and fled to his parked car. A brief physical altercation between the officers and Gordon ensued next to and inside of the vehicle. Gordon was able to start the car and put it into gear to flee from the scene. In doing so, Gordon knocked both officers to the ground with the moving vehicle and drove over one of them.

Both officers were medically transported for injuries sustained from Gordon’s actions.  One officer was treated and released from the hospital the same evening. However, the officer who was run over suffered broken bones in their left arm and left hand along with extensive nerve damage in those areas. Fortunately, after 3 surgeries and 18 months of recovery and physical therapy, the officer was able to return to full duty.

The day after the original incident, in 2017, Gordon was identified, located, and arrested by SLPD detectives in Oakland following a brief vehicle pursuit.

“I am pleased to see justice being served on behalf of our heroic police officers,” says SLPD Chief Angela Averiett, “I’d like to thank the jury for their time and efforts on bringing closure to this horrific case by removing a dangerous individual off our streets.”

Gordon now awaits a sentencing hearing scheduled for next month.
