Police Seek Help Locating Man Wanted for Questioning in Shooting Investigation

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé requests the public’s help locating Tyree Smith, 18, who is wanted for questioning regarding a shooting that occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
 
At approximately 5:05 p.m., Police responded to the 100 block of Pennington Street on a call of a shooting. A group of six or seven Black males began shooting at each other following a verbal altercation. Responding officers did not locate any victims, but recovered spent shell casings at the scene. Police later received a report that a male gunshot victim had arrived at St. Michael’s Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The victim was transported to University Hospital for further treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.
 
Detectives investigating this incident are seeking Tyree Smith for questioning. He is described as 6’5” tall and 160 pounds. He has a dark-brown complexion and brown eyes.
 
Director Fragé urges anyone with information about the whereabouts of Tyree Smith to call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward.
