City of Hoboken announces funding for public facility projects at the Hoboken Housing Authority
Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken today announced plans to award over $765,000 to fund public facility projects at the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, allocated to the city by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The CDBG funds will be utilized to make significant upgrades at Mama Johnson Field, including upgraded indoor restroom facilities and an elevated press box. Other improvements include security upgrades including new driveway gates and improved lighting on the main HHA campus, the resurfacing of playgrounds at 310 Jackson St., 311 Harrison St., and 320 Marshall Dr., and new garbage and recycling containers with proper rodent-proofing for HHA property.
“Anything we can do to update the facilities in our public housing properties, is money well spent,” said Mayor Bhalla. “Needless to say, these upgrades will go a long way in improving the quality of life of our valued residents. Thank you to the members of our Community Development team who worked so diligently to facilitate these much-needed funds.”
“I am proud to see this critical federal funding go towards upgrading Hoboken’s Housing Authority facilities,” said Congressman Rob Menendez. “Investing in our community’s infrastructure is an investment in the well-being of our families and neighbors. Thanks to the Biden Administration, we are able to bring back federal funding to all of our communities and excited that Hoboken will receive these essential resources. I look forward to seeing the positive impact for all who call Hoboken home.”
The Hoboken Department of Community Development works in partnership with a wide range of public agencies and non-profit organizations every year to administer CDBG funding, awarded to the City annually, which helps to provide vital community programs and opportunities for public facility rehabilitation.
A public hearing on the draft Annual Action Plan for CDBG Program Year 2024, including public facilities and public service projects, will be held on June 24, 2024, at 6pm in the ground floor conference room at Hoboken City Hall. Following the hearing, the City Council will formally vote to authorize the funding allocations.
