Mayor Purzycki, Chief Campos Announce Job Openings for Certified Police Officers Interested in Joining the City’s Police Department:

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Chief of Police Wilfredo Campos announced today the opening of a special hiring process for certified police officers who are interested in joining the Wilmington Police Department. As the department continues to complete the selection process for new police applicants for its 103rd Wilmington Police Academy, this additional hiring process for already-certified police officers will support our efforts to fill additional vacancies that still remain unfilled.

“We often hear from certified police officers working in other agencies that they are interested in joining our department to continue their police service while contributing to the progress we have been making in Wilmington,” said Chief Campos. “This special hiring process will give us a chance to welcome these officers into the WPD family, and will help fill additional positions that are vacant.”

As part of the application process, the WPD will work closely with the Delaware State Police to review the training records and experience of each applicant and to determine what additional training will be required for selected applicants to become Wilmington Police officers. Required training will then be facilitated by our Human Resources Division.

To learn more about this process and to apply online, visit www.WilmingtonDE.gov/CityJobs. You can also contact Sgt. Aaron Metzner at (302) 576-3177 or email him at [email protected].

Applications are due by Friday, July 19, 2024.

"I have always said with a great amount of pride that Wilmington has one of the finest police departments in the nation, with dedicated men and women who are committed to protecting our diverse communities with honor and integrity,” said Mayor Purzycki. “I hope that qualified applicants will take advantage of this special opportunity to continue their careers as members of the WPD. There has never been a better time to begin a career in law enforcement in our City, as more and more members of the community come to recognize and respect the interconnectedness of public safety and public service.”

Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, must have completed high school or a GED equivalent, and must be hired prior to their 37th birthday. A valid driver’s license is required, and applicants must currently be a certified police officer.

Lateral transfers are available for applicants with at least two years of full-time police experience, and current police officers serving outside of Delaware must have at least two years of experience.

Selected applicants with less than three years of police service at another agency would be hired with a starting salary of $67,500; for applicants with between three and five years of service, they would start at $72,500; and for applicants with more than five years of police service, their starting salary would be $87,929 at a Corporal rate.

Selected applicants will not be subject to a residency requirement.

Similar to the application and selection process for applicants who are not certified police officers, the screening process will include an extensive background check and an interview with the Chief of Police, as well as medical and psychological examinations.
