Shooting Suspect Arrested

Hours after a shooting occurred, SMPD arrests suspect.

San Mateo, CA – On June 13, 2024, at 4:44 p.m., San Mateo Police Department received a 911 call saying one person had just been shot near the intersection of East Hillsdale Boulevard and Norfolk Street.

Multiple officers responded “code-3”, with lights and sirens to the area.  As officers arrived on scene, they were told by witnesses the shooting happened on the 1500 block of Lago Street.  Officers started immediately searching for victims and evidence of the crime.  Officers located several shell casings near a red Chevrolet sedan, a cell phone, and blood droplets on the sidewalk of Lago Street.  However, the victim of the shooting was no longer on scene.

Officers secured the crime scene and starting speaking to several witnesses as additional resources were called to the scene to help investigate and to keep the community safe.  Officers were told the suspect possibly ran into a nearby apartment building.  Officers surrounded the apartment building, and a drone was used to search for the suspect.  A shelter in place order was sent to the public.

As officers we were on scene collecting information, a gunshot victim was found in San Carlos.  San Mateo officers responded to San Carlos, and it was determined she was the victim in this incident.  The victim was transported to a local trauma hospital.

Officers continued to gather more information related to the incident and confirmed the suspect, Brittany Stewart, was inside an apartment located on the 1500 block of Lago Street.  Due to the fact Stewart was armed with a firearm and dangerous, the North Regional County SWAT team responded to the scene.

A detailed plan was formed to protect the community and safely contact Stewart.  Officers from the Crisis Negotiation Team were able to contact Stewart by phone and have her exit the apartment and surrender to police.  Stewart was safely arrested and later booked into the San Mateo County Jail.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Bureau continued the investigation and authored a search warrant for the apartment where Stewart was hiding.  During a search of the apartment, the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was found and collected as evidence.

We need the community’s support in reporting crimes and being a good witness.  If you witness a crime, contact police immediately.  Try to remain as calm as possible and do your best to answer questions on the phone.  Remember details such as the suspect’s appearance, clothing, any distinguishing features, and which direction they flee. Once the police arrive at the scene, cooperate fully, and provide the officers with all the information you have.  Your observations can greatly assist law enforcement in their investigation.
