Balmiere-Riverside Footbridge Update - 06/17/2024
Please see the following update regarding the Balmiere Parkway / Riverside Drive Footbridge Update, offered by the Township's Engineering Department:
Balmiere-Riverside Footbridge Update
The contractor, CMS Construction, hired by Union County, will return tomorrow (6.18) to the project site to install the “coffer dam” (Sheet Piles) that will serve as the barrier along the levee while the bridge foundation will be installed. The coffer dam will allow for the excavation of the levee walls and allow dry working conditions for the contractor.
The coffer dam will be installed to the same height as the existing levee so there will be little impact to the volume capacity of the Rahway River along the project area.
- The installation of the coffer dam will require the closure of Balmiere Parkway while they are being installed.
- The contractor will be using a vibratory method to install the coffer dam at the proper depth that may be loud at times and felt in the general vicinity of the work area.
- If the contractor runs into denser soils or large rock they may need to bring in an impact hammer to help facilitate the installation.
- The installation of the coffer dam will take several days. When completed, the contractor will begin excavation work for the foundations. The foundation work will take about three weeks to complete.
