Deputies in Fontana Conduct Proactive Quality of Life Operation and Find Assault Rifle

DATE/TIME: June 21, 2024, at approximately 9:00 a.m.

INCIDENT: Proactive Quality of Life Enforcement

LOCATION: Calabash Avenue / San Bernardino Avenue, Fontana

VICTIM(S): Local Residents & Business Owners

SUMMARY: For the past several months, there has been a high number of crimes involving homeless encampments in the area near the Fontana Speedway. Deputies have responded to various calls for service ranging from robberies, drug sales, assaults with weapons, stolen property, vandalism to commercial buildings, vehicles and complaints from residents and business owners in the area.

On Friday, June 21, 2024, Fontana Station deputies worked with San Bernardino County Code Enforcement to clean and protect the community where families and business owners reside and work. Deputies assisted Code Enforcement Officers by providing security and resources for subjects in need, without housing. Several abandoned, problem recreational vehicles (RVs) used to conduct drug transactions and attract crime were searched and removed.

During the course of this operation, Fontana Station deputies located an AR-15 style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine hidden in one of the problem RVs. Deputies are investigating this incident and have leads for the subject responsible for possessing the weapon.

The safety and welfare of the public is important; therefore, proactive enforcement is necessary to help restore quality of life issues for residents in the Fontana community.  Fontana Station personnel remain highly committed and will continue to work in partnership with the community and other agencies to protect the public.
