Flood Advisory until 07:00PM Sunday
Warm daytime and overnight temperatures have continued the melting of high elevation snowpack and glacier ice to produce minor flooding along the Chilkat River. Warm temperatures will continue through the week and into the weekend, causing continued daily crests.
* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt continues.
* WHERE...The Chilkat River near areas around Mile Post 14 and 24 of the Haines Highway, near Klukwan and the Chilkat River Bridge.
* WHEN...Until 700 PM AKDT Sunday.
* IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying areas.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 1208 PM AKDT, River gauge reports indicate rises in water levels from snowmelt in areas around mile post 14 and 24 of the Haines Highway, near Klukwan and the Chilkat River Bridge. Minor flooding is ongoing, especially near the Chilkat River. - Please send reports of impacts and pictures of those impacts with specific location information to the National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau by email ([email protected]), or via X, or Facebook. - For Chilkat River at Klukwan: At 12:00pm the stage was 126.37 feet. Flood Stage is 126.0 feet. Forecast: Crests between 126.0 and 126.5 feet are likely over the next several days. Daily minimums in water levels at the Chilkat River Bridge will occur at around 10pm and daily crests at around 10am are expected. Impacts: At 126.0 feet: Bankfull stage. Water will begin to flood backyards along the Chilkat River in the village of Klukwan. At 126.5 feet: Expect flooding of yards and bank erosion near the Jilkaat Kwan Cultural Heritage Center Campus Traditional Knowledge camp in the village of Klukwan. Water will flood lower elevations in backyards along the Chilkat River near Klukwan and start to impact some smokehouse and a river access road. - For the Klehini River: Daily water level peaks at the 26 mile bridge gauge will occur near midnight. - If you live near or along the Chilkat river, stay alert and be prepared to take action.
