**UPDATE #1**Person Shot Investigation Leads to Police Pursuit and Officer-Involved Shooting

UPDATE #2 (July 10, 2024) Following the threat assessment related to the officer-involved shooting on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 in the 8400 block of Maple Leaf Ln, IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey announced the officer involved as 4-year veteran Officer Edward Lenane.

IMPD will continue to be fair and transparent with our community while protecting the integrity of criminal investigations and officer safety. IMPD formalized a policy in 2020 that outlines when and how officers involved in critical incidents should be identified to the public. This policy solidifies IMPD’s practice of conducting a threat assessment by the IMPD Intelligence Unit following a critical incident and prior to releasing the names of the officers involved to protect the officer and their families. This policy ensures information is provided to the public as soon as possible.

This incident is being investigated by IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). Detectives are working with the Marion County Prosecutors Office and the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency to complete a fair and thorough investigation.

IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate internal investigation to ensure compliance with departmental policy, as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory review of this incident as it does for any use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The information provided is preliminary and subject to change.

On June 25, 2024, just after 3:00 pm, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Northwest District officers were dispatched to the 9000 block of Wesleyan Road on a report of shots fired. Multiple callers said a suspect had fired shots outside the business.

Once on scene, one adult female victim was located with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s) and was transported the hospital in stable condition. IMPD detectives believe the suspect and female victim knew one another and believe this incident may be domestic related. Another adult victim, believed to be a Good Samaritan, was also located with bite wounds and other injuries and transported to the area hospital with non-fatal injuries.

Officers were quickly alerted by several witnesses to a maroon Dodge Ram truck that may have been involved in this shooting. As officers arrived, witnesses pointed to the vehicle as it fled the scene.

A Lawrence Police Department officer, along with a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy, in marked police vehicles, located the vehicle moments later and attempted to stop the truck with emergency lights and sirens activated.  The driver did not pull over and a pursuit began.  The pursuit continued for several miles and involved multiple agencies, including IMPD, Indiana State Police, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence Police Department.

The pursuit eventually ended in the 8400 block of Maple Leaf Lane when the suspect exited the truck and ran on foot and forced entry into a nearby apartment, pursued by officers. Detectives believe the suspect knew that female occupant of that apartment and had been staying there. When officers entered the upstairs apartment, the suspect had the victim at knife point.  Officers told the suspect multiple times to “drop the knife”, to which he refused. At some point, an officer involved shooting occurred with one IMPD officer and one Lawrence Police Officer discharging their weapon.

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS).

The female victim from the apartment at Maple Leaf Lane was treated on-scene and released.

No officers or other uninvolved citizens were injured during this incident.

Detectives located a rifle at the initial scene and a knife near the suspect at the second scene (photos of both are attached).

All IMPD officers and LPD officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during this incident.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office will be assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death. The Marion County Coroner’s Officer (MCCO) will release the decedent's name once a proper next-of-kin notification has been made.

Detectives are confident there is no ongoing threat to the community.  There is no suspect outstanding.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs.  The Lawrence Police Department will also conduct a separate administrative investigation done by LPD Internal Affairs. The IMPD officer and the LPD officer who fired their gun have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting investigation.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for officers.  The IMPD Chaplain’s Office responded to assist with those involved.

The IMPD Victims Assistance unit responded to assist officers and detectives.
