Man Barricades Himself in a Vehicle after Vandalizing and Starting a Fire at a Local Business

DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 27, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m.

INCIDENT: Barricaded Subject

LOCATION: Commercial Parking Lot, 57000 Block of Twentynine Palms Highway, Yucca Valley

SUSPECT(S): Jerry Whitehurst, 40-year-old transient of Yucca Valley 


SUMMARY:  On Thursday, June 27, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m., deputies from the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station responded to a report of an in progress vandalisim and arson at a Yucca Valley business. The suspect, later identified as Jerry Whitehurst, fled on foot when contacted by deputies and entered a pickup truck in the parking lot that did not belong to him. Whitehurst refused to exit the truck when ordered to do so by deputies. Whitehurst barricaded himself inside the truck and claimed to have a gun and an explosive device.

Local businesses were evacuated and a perimiter was set up to ensure safety to members of the public. Members of the Sheriff's Department's Specialized Enforcement Division, to include negotiatiors, were summoned and responded to the scene. SWAT tactics, including negotiations, were used in an attempt for a safe surrender. Ultimately, Whitehurst exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. The vehicle and scene have been rendered safe.
