On June 29, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Redwood City Officers were dispatched to the area of Broadway and Hamilton Street on report of a subject brandishing a handgun in front of multiple community members in the downtown area.  Responding officers observed a subject matching the description provided by witnesses running from the scene.  Officers were able to catch up to the subject and detained him.  A search of his person revealed he had a loaded 9mm handgun concealed in his front waistband.

Officers conducted further investigation and determined the suspect, East Palo Alto resident Lamont Lomack (age 33), was a convicted felon on parole for a prior carjacking.  The officers also determined the serial number of the handgun had been filed off.  Lomack was arrested for a variety of gun related charges, including brandishing a firearm, unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, among other charges.   Lomack was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility.

INCIDENT #2 LOCATION:  El Camino Real at Jefferson Avenue, Redwood City

DATE/TIME: July 1, 2024, 10:45 p.m.

On July 1, 2024, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Redwood City Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of El Camino Real and Jefferson Avenue after multiple community members called to report a subject armed with a handgun and firing shots into the air.  Witnesses provided a detailed description and reported the subject was last seen walking towards the Sequoia Station shopping center.  Investigating officers searched the area and located a suspect matching the description provided by witnesses in front of Safeway.  The suspect, later identified as Oakland resident Kai Jones (age 22), was contacted and officers ordered him to the ground at gunpoint. Jones cooperated and was detained.  A loaded 9mm handgun with an extended magazine was located on the pavement just feet from where he was taken into custody.  Multiple community members who witnessed the shooting were brought to the scene and positively identified Jones as the shooter.  Officers also located five spent shell casings on the southeast corner of the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and El Camino Real.

Jones was arrested and booked into the McGuire Correctional Facility on charges of willful discharge of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm.

The Department is grateful that no one was hurt in either of the incidents and that community members came forward and played an important part in the identification and apprehension of both suspects.  These incidents highlight the importance of the community and police department working collaboratively together to enhance public safety.
