Security System Leads to Arrest for Residential Burglary, West Point

On June 6, 2024, at about 7:20 AM, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a homeowner reporting a burglary in progress at their residence.  The caller stated they were away from their residence and received a notification from a self-installed home security system. The victim logged onto the security surveillance system and observed two suspects burglarizing her residence.   Deputies responded to the 1000 block of Skoal Flat Rd., West Point; however, the suspects left prior to their arrival.  Deputies initiated an investigation and collected evidence.
The victim posted a segment of the video on a popular social media platform to alert people to the burglary and warn them to be cautious if they observe the suspects in their area. This sparked an anonymous phone call to the investigating deputy. The anonymous caller provided the identity of the suspect in the post video. The suspect's identity was verified using previously taken official government photos as Kevin McFarland, age 44, of West Point.
On June 16, 2024, deputies attempted to contact suspect McFarland at his residence. As they pulled into the driveway, he fled into a wooded area.
On July 9, 2024, deputies located suspect McFarland sitting in his vehicle on Main Street, West Point.  Suspect McFarland was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Calaveras County Jail, where he was booked on charges of felony burglary and misdemeanor vandalism.
