Driver Arrested for DUI and Other Charges After Pursuit Through Hesperia
DATE/TIME: July 9, 2024 / 3:30 p.m.
INCIDENT: Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer, Child Abuse, Evading a Police Officer, Driving Under the Influence
LOCATION: 15700 block of Main Street, Hesperia
SUSPECT(S): Juan Carrera Suarez, 33-year-old resident of Hesperia
SUMMARY: On July 9, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m., deputies with the Hesperia Police Department responded to the 15700 block of Main Street in the city of Hesperia, reference reports of a subject carrying a weapon in the parking lot outside of the location. When deputies arrived, a juvenile was observed entering the passenger side of the suspect’s vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was given commands by deputies to exit the vehicle, however the driver did not comply fled the location.
Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle at which time the driver reversed the vehicle and collided with the patrol vehicle causing damage. The driver fled the location at a high rate of speed leading deputies on an approximately 10-mile pursuit. The driver eventually stopped and exited the vehicle holding an unknown weapon. The driver dropped the weapon and fled the location in the vehicle. He eventually stopped and was taken into custody.
The driver, Juan Carrera Suarez, and juvenile, a 16-year-old male, were determined to be intoxicated and the weapon was determined to be an airsoft gun. The juvenile was released to his parents. There were no injuries during this incident.
Carrera Suarez was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for PC245(c)- Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer, PC273A(a)- Child Abuse, VC2800.2(a)- Evading a Police Officer with Disregard for Safety, VC2800.4- Evading a Police Officer Wrong Way Driver, VC23152(a)/(b)- Driving Under the Influence over 0.08 percent. Additionally, Carrera Suarez had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
