Hoboken PD to acquire a Mobile Command Center

Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla, Public Safety Director Ken Ferrante, and Police Chief Steven Aguiar announced the Hoboken Police Department will acquire a state-of-the-art Police Mobile Command Center (PMCC) following City Council’s unanimous approval of approximately $1.1 million in funding to purchase and retrofit the vehicle.

Once purchased, outfitted, and delivered, the Hoboken PMCC will be deployed for a variety of planned events and emergency operations, including large celebrations, street fairs and festivals, public safety incidents, severe weather events, and more. When not in use at an event or emergency, the vehicle will, at times, be positioned at high priority locations throughout the City including the Hoboken Housing Authority, the waterfront area, and Hoboken Terminal.

"The Police Mobile Command Center will be yet another tool our police officers can wield to best protect and serve our community,” said Mayor Bhalla. “With its cutting-edge technology and mobile capabilities, this vehicle is not just an investment in the Police Department, it is an investment in our entire community and its safety.”

“Bringing this type of unit to Hoboken will help modernize our police response by bringing critical technology for police command directly to a scene or emergency,” said Public Safety Director Ferrante. “It will help ensure rapid responses, provide even better security, maintain reliable and constant communication at emergency situations, ensure proper preparedness, and meet the increasing demands of public safety in Hoboken.”

“The mobile command center will allow us to bring essential resources wherever - and whenever - they are needed throughout the City,” said Chief Aguiar. “I look forward to putting the PMCC into service, to better empower our officers to even better protect and serve our residents”

Representatives from the Public Safety Department will engage a qualified vendor to acquire a vehicle with an appropriate layout, and have it outfitted with the necessary specifications, including emergency lighting, cameras, communications equipment, and other technology to maximize use.

It is anticipated that the Hoboken Police Mobile Command Center will be put into service by the summer of 2025.

Join the Public Safety conversation at CAPS tonight 

The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Public Safety Department will host the next CAPS meeting tonight, July 16, 2024 at Metropolis, 96 River St., from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  

CAPS, or Community And Public Safety, is a way for members of the public to meet and engage with local public safety officials. Representatives of Hoboken Police, Hoboken Fire, Hoboken Office of Emergency Management, Hoboken EMS and Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Hoboken Health Division will be on hand for presentations, conversations, and a question-and-answer session.   

Apply to be a Hoboken Firefighter  

Those interested in becoming a Hoboken Firefighter are encouraged to apply, with applications available through Sept. 3 at 4 p.m.  

Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old, a US citizen, a resident of Hoboken, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. There is a $35 application fee. 

Eligible candidates will take the New Jersey Entry-Level Firefighter Examination, which is expected to be scheduled for late fall/early winter 2024. 

Candidates who pass the firefighter exam and are certified in Hoboken will be required to pass the Physical Performance Test (PPT) and agree to a background investigation.
