Advisory

NWS heat advisory in effect; Use caution in extreme heat

A National Weather Service heat advisory is in effect for Hudson County, including Hoboken, through 10 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, July 17.

The region is experiencing hot temperatures and high humidity, which may result in heat index values of up to 104 degrees. This level of heat and humidity can cause heat illnesses, especially in the most vulnerable, including seniors and those with chronic health problems. Homes without air conditioning can become much hotter than outdoor temperatures. Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning.

The Hoboken Health Division encourages those who must work outside to schedule frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.  In cases of heat stroke call 9-1-1.

Other recommendations to stay safe and healthy during extreme heat from the Division of Health include:

  • Check on vulnerable loved ones and neighbors
  • Stay hydrated by drinking more water than usual
  • Avoid drinking alcohol and sugary drinks
  • Wear light and loose-fitting clothing
  • Stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Hudson County has opened a daytime cooling center for those in need at the Naval Reserve Building, 53 South Hackensack Ave., Kearny. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, through Sept. 15. The County provides bus transportation to the center from the Hoboken terminal at approximately 10:45 a.m. each morning. Anyone who misses the cooling center bus, and is in need of transportation, can call 2-1-1. The Hoboken Shelter is also serving as a County cooling center for the unhoused.

Be advised, there is also an air quality alert for Hudson County, including Hoboken, today. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP) has issued an Air Quality Action Day, which means ground level ozone may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.

Residents should monitor local forecasts for additional advisories, watches, and warnings.
