Newark Firefighters Extinguish 3-Alarm Fire at 263 South Orange Avenue

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé reports that Firefighters extinguished a 3-alarm fire at 263 South Orange Avenue on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
 
At approximately 12:14 p.m., Firefighters responded to a call of fire at the occupied 3-story, brick multi-use, multi-family building. Responding Firefighters observed fire in the building’s 1st floor and extending to the 2nd and 3rd floors. The fire also extended to adjacent buildings at 261 and 265 South Orange Avenue.
 
Due to excessive outdoor and seasonal temperatures, a 2nd alarm was called at 12:48 p.m. and a 3rd alarm was called at 1:45 p.m. Three firefighters were transported to University Hospital for evaluation of heat exhaustion. No other injuries have been reported. Residents relocated include 35 adults and 16 children.
 
The fire was considered under control at 3:38 p.m. Mutual aid was provided by the firefighters from the fire departments of East Orange, Montclair, Orange, Verona, Millburn, Irvington, and Jersey City.
