Suspect Arrested Driving a Stolen Vehicle and Fleeing from Police

Suspect was in a vehicle he stole, fled from police, and was arrested after a pursuit.

San Mateo, CA – On July 17, 2024, at 2:56 a.m., San Mateo Police Department was alerted to a possible stolen vehicle by an Automated License Plate Reader camera near East Poplar Avenue and North Amphlett Boulevard.  The camera captured a photograph of a black Mercedes-Benz that was reported stolen on July 16.  Officers responded to the area searching for the car and located a black Mercedes-Benz.  Officers performed a records check of the license plate and confirmed the car was reported stolen from Mountain View.

A traffic stop was attempted and the driver of the stolen vehicle, Jonathan Connelly, accelerated and started evading police officers.  Connelly drove at high rates of speed, failed to stop at stop signs and red lights, and recklessly drove through San Mateo until he merged northbound onto Highway 101.

With the assistance of CHP officers, officers pursued the stolen vehicle north on Highway 101 through San Francisco and over the Bay Bridge until Connelly crashed near the toll plaza on Highway 80.  Once Connelly crashed the car, he exited and began running away from officers.  Officers caught up to Connelly and he continued to resist until officers were able to detain him in handcuffs and he was placed under arrest.

Due to Connelly being in a traffic collision, he was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.  After being medically cleared, Connelly was transported and booked into San Mateo County Jail.
Please remember to protect yourself and your property.  There are numerous antitheft systems and devices designed to make vehicles more difficult to steal or easier to trace and recover, these include audible alarms, devices like steering-wheel locks, and GPS devices to track your vehicle.  Take the time to close and lock all windows and door when you park your car, never leave your keys in your car, park in well lit areas, and never leave valuables in your vehicle.  Always remember if you see something suspicious, call SMPD.  If you see something, say something.
