Newark Firefighters Extinguish 2-Alarm Fire at 76 Barbara Street

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé reports that firefighters extinguished a 2-alarm fire at 76 Barbara Street on Monday, July 22, 2024.
 
At approximately 8:10 p.m., firefighters responded to a call of fire in the basement of the occupied 3-story building. A 2nd alarm was called to stop the spread of the fire to an adjacent building at 74 Barbara Street.
 
Two firefighters were transported to University Hospital for treatment after one suffered from cuts on his arm, and the other suffered a leg and ankle injury when a staircase collapsed. Both firefighters are reportedly in stable condition. Two other firefighters were treated at the scene by EMS for heat exhaustion and remained on duty. No other injuries have been reported.
 
The fire was considered under control at 8:55 p.m. A total of 24 residents, including 19 adults and five children, have been relocated.
 
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit. #newarknj #publicsafety #firefighter #community #partnership #newjersey #fire #firefighters #injury
