Felony Assault in Downtown Petaluma

On Friday, July 19, 2024, at approximately 7:51 PM, the Petaluma Police Department Dispatch Center received a phone call of an assault that occurred in the 60 block of East Washington Street. The reporting party (later identified as the victim) reported that he was ‘beat’ up. The victim noted the suspect had left the scene after the assault.
 
Officers responded to the area where they spoke to the eighteen-year-old victim and reviewed video surveillance from a nearby business. It was determined the suspect had approached the victim and punched him causing him (victim) to fall to the ground. While on the ground, the suspect continued punching the victim. The victim received several injuries to his head and was seen by paramedics on scene. The victim was later self-transported to a nearby hospital.    
 
Officers were able to contact the suspect who was later identified as being a 17-year-old Petaluma resident. The suspect was known to the victim. Based on the information collected by officers, the juvenile suspect was arrested for felony assault-243(d) PC. The juvenile suspect was transported to the Sonoma County Juvenile Detention Center in Santa Rosa.
 
The Petaluma Police Department is asking for anyone with information leading up to the assault or who may have witnessed the assault to call Officer Cody Giles at (707) 781-1250.
