On July 24^th, 2024, around 10:30 a.m., SLPD officers responded to the 500 block of Kenilworth Avenue regarding a work truck and attached trailer that had been stolen about 15 minutes earlier.  While the primary officer conducted the preliminary investigation, detectives from the Property Crimes/Crime Suppression Unit began canvassing for the stolen vehicle.  A detective located the stolen work truck, without the trailer, in the area of Dowling Street and 88^th Avenue in Oakland.  Surveillance was conducted while additional resources responded to assist.
 
While watching the stolen truck, a detective noticed a gray Lexus sedan arrive and park in front of it. This Lexus was identified as the suspect vehicle in a separate auto theft that was reported a few hours earlier.  Two occupants from the Lexus began accessing the stolen work truck.  Patrol units and other detectives arrived on scene and detained 3 subjects in total.  Further investigation revealed the gray Lexus was a “cold-plated” stolen vehicle taken 2 days ago from Fremont.  The missing trailer was located several blocks away, with approximately $30,000 worth of tools still on it.  Two of the 3 detained subjects were ultimately placed under arrest for auto theft and outstanding warrants.
 
While property crimes tend to be lower in priority than violent ones, SLPD nevertheless understands the impact they have on the welfare and livelihoods of victims.  We continue to devote resources to apprehend those responsible and recover as much loss as we can.  We would also like to remind our community that security cameras are an invaluable tool to capture suspect descriptions and footage of criminal activity.  In addition to providing investigative leads that may lead to apprehension, this evidence can be critically important in future prosecutions.
